Fabrication Laboratory is a maker space that is based in Budapest, Hungary, since May of 2011. Our aim is to maintain a sustainable space for an open community where people can share and realize their ideas meanwhile learning from each other. Therefore we combined several business models and working methods and we could manage to have all modeling and prototyping materials and tools accessible on site. Since we started “The Lab” has been open almost every day. As multidisciplinary space people can hold workshops on the topics of their own best practices, from using various handcrafted machinery and computer aided manufacturing tools through freehand sketching, programming, 3D modeling, electronic design to sound engineering or photography. These open know-hows are generated either locally or gathered from the world wide network of Fablabs as primary answers for local, personal or corporate needs. According to our keywords “learning by doing” and “self-motivation” we let professionals, hobbyists, students and freelancers join teams working on private projects, research or business orders. We’ve just started a development of a website for “cloudsourcing” – to connect ongoing and planned projects with possible stakeholders.

As part of the Fablab network we believe in easily reproducible and exchangeable modules of solutions because all labs in the network have cross compatible machinery which leads to the ability to create almost anything.

an ‘horloge a vent’(wind clock), an imaginary time keeping device regulated by the irregular movement of the wind …
workshops, art radio sessions, public access digital media archive, public presentations, conferences and exhibitions, a critical publication … ‘re-inventing ecological time’…

Second round of TIK Radio research and production workshops. This time we deal with content (see also our however preliminary TIKr content workshop programme – that is of course now transformed according to our work in progress). After discussing several core topics and methodologies we are going today into trial mode of our developed ideas.
Within this framework, Verena is developing further the Time Bending Clock (TBC) with further entries in the TIME BENDING CLOCK WORK‘s encyclopedia.

Besides that our discussions are continuing … and we ~~are also heading into~~ update: meanwhile went into radio production. Moreover, expect some nice TIKky overall concept and format for our ongoing TIK Radio transmissions.
On Fri, March 19 we’ll also do a nice little live TIK radio show that will be streamed as well, so you can join us!

Open motor controller

As you may know, the preparations and creating robots for bacarobo europe has begun! If you ever need something for a robot beyond sensors is a driver for dc or stepper motors. For helping participants I’ve designed yesterday a super-simple shield for arduino, to control 4 DCs or 2 steppers.

The shield can drive 600mA on each channel, the peak current is 1.2A/100us. I’ve also created a library which you can download here, the eagle files and the printable panel pdf is here. Although it’s not the final version, I’m going to rewire the chip enable pins to hw pwm outputs of the arduino, and there is no stepper motor control implemented in the library yet. These updates will be done soon.

Scanning buildings

After SPARK festival in Minneapolis, I spent a week in the studio of my friends, Chris Baker. Our idea was to develop an application which can help the work of who’s dealing with facade projections, for example our friends at MAW. The concept is about using the projector to scan the 3D structure of the building, including windows, doors, corners, etc… and use the model in the projection scene as a space of particle systems and so on.

The method we’ve been using is developed by Kyle McDonald can be found on instructables and it’s called structured light scanning.

Since the project is also on openprocessing, modifying the code for large scale was pretty easy.

Mosfet shield for Teensy

While my stay at Minneapolis, a friend of mine who is also a teacher at the UM art department asked me to modify one of the shields made for Arduino to be compatible with Teensy. The nice thing with the clones that they almost look the same, but there are some tiny differences for example pinouts, just like in this situation.

The shiled was designed by IDEO Labs and it’s actually super-nice. It contains a battery charger, a 3.3V voltage regulator, and 8 mini sized mosfets. With FDMA1024z transistors on board you can switch 5 amp per channel! One of the most usefull add-ons to a microcontroller board.

Since the arduino mini pro, doesn’t have a usb connector (nano has, and it’s almost pincompatible with the teensy), and the students know Teensy best there was no other choice than modifying the eagle files. You can download them here.

Spark 2010

I’ve arrived yesterday to Minneapolis after an almost 20 hour flight through London and Chicago and started to set up the twittbot installation. Unfortunately there is only one robot which is fully functional, the others lost their voices. At least I can go to RadioShack and buy some new speakers.

The opening is the day after tomorrow so there shouldn’t be no problem. I kind of like Minneapolis in september, last year the festival was at winter and nothing is worse for a mediterran guy than a Minnesota freezing cold winter. The Quarter gallery is really nice, it’s a big open space with grey industrial floor, so the robots going to fit well.

OK, I go and get some 52oz american coffe…
